What is the Project?
The Scheme will be the ‘Musselburgh Flood Protection Scheme (year of approval)’ as confirmed under the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009 (the FRM) and its Regulations. Once constructed, the Scheme will provide formal flood risk reduction to the town of Musselburgh and it will become a part of the existing built environment.
The project is the vehicle through which the design, approval, and thereafter construction of the Scheme is being advanced.
Once completed the project will come to an end and the future management of the Scheme will transfer to the Council’s Flooding Team.
The Scheme is being advance by East Lothian Council further to its approval of the Local Flood Risk Management Plan (Forth Estuary Local Plan District) in 2016.
The Project Stages
The Scheme is being advanced under the PRINCE2 Project Management System. This sees the project set-up as discrete stages with each following on from the last, and with a gateway review between each stage. There are nine stages to the project’s delivery:

- Project Stage 3: Options Appraisal Process
- Project Stage 4: Outline Design
- Project Stage 5: Statutory Approval
- Project Stage 6: Detailed Design
- Project Stage 7: Construction Procurement
- Project Stage 8: Advanced Works Construction
- Project Stage 9: Main Works Construction
